How to Plan Your First Grand Canyon Visit

The Grand Canyon is famous for its immense scale, layered red-rock scenery and changing light. A little planning helps you enjoy the views while keeping your visit comfortable and safe.

1. Choose your rim and starting point

The South Rim is the most visited area and offers visitor services, viewpoints and shuttle options during operating periods. The North Rim is more remote and has a shorter seasonal operating window. Check current conditions and access before choosing your route.

2. Give yourself time for the viewpoints

Rather than rushing between every stop, choose a few viewpoints and allow time to take in the landscape. Sunrise and sunset can be beautiful, but temperatures, visibility and transport schedules vary by season.

3. Pack for changing conditions

Bring drinking water, sun protection, sturdy footwear and layers. Temperatures at the rim can differ greatly from those inside the canyon. Stay behind barriers and keep a safe distance from cliff edges.

4. Check official park updates before you go

Road access, shuttle service, trails, fees and facilities can change. Confirm the latest information directly with the National Park Service before travelling.

5. Make the trip your own

For a relaxed first visit, focus on a manageable area rather than trying to see everything in one day. Respect wildlife, carry out your rubbish and follow posted safety guidance so the park stays special for future visitors.
